Ubisoft and Nintendo Collaborate to Enhance VRR for All Switch 2 Titles

Ubisoft continues to foster its strong partnership with Nintendo, a bond that has resulted in some memorable collaborations over the years. The relationship, which flourished with the original Nintendo Switch, has expanded to the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans still fondly remember the successful Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle from 2017 and its 2022 follow-up, Sparks of Hope, both of which were born from this alliance.

Innovative VRR Technology on Nintendo Switch 2

This year, Ubisoft demonstrated its commitment to technological advancement by successfully porting some of its most sophisticated games to the Nintendo Switch 2, notably Star Wars: Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Reports suggest that Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which launched earlier this month, harnesses a unique Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) algorithm. Remarkably, this allows the game to maintain VRR support at its fixed 30 FPS frame rate, even though the hardware generally supports VRR at 40 FPS and above. Ubisoft elaborated on this by revealing a technique that presents the same frame twice, effectively creating a 60Hz output for smoother visuals.

Future Prospects and Anvil Engine Enhancements

Interestingly, Ubisoft is collaborating with Nintendo to potentially expand this custom VRR system across all Nintendo Switch 2 games, promising smoother gameplay for all users. While no timeline is available, this development could enhance the handheld experience significantly. Moreover, Ubisoft confirmed that this VRR feature is now integral to the Anvil Engine, hinting at its presence in upcoming games like the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, rumored for a January 2026 release. The technology is also poised to feature in the anticipated March 2026 release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced.
