Twelve and a half years have passed since the release of BioShock Infinite, the last chapter in the beloved first-person shooter series. Fans of the BioShock franchise eagerly await new adventures, as the series creator Ken Levine branches out with his team at Ghost Story Games to develop Judas. According to Levine, Judas will carry some similarities to BioShock but will also offer fresh and unique experiences for players.
The Next Chapter for BioShock
Back in late 2019, 2K’s publishing branch revealed the formation of Cloud Chamber, a new studio headquartered in Novato, California, entrusted with the BioShock intellectual property. However, the journey has not been smooth, with reports indicating a project reboot in 2023 and significant layoffs affecting around 80 employees this past August. As a result, the new BioShock installment is anticipated to launch in the latter half of 2027.
New Leadership and the Future
In a major leadership shift, industry veteran Rod Fergusson has taken the helm at Cloud Chamber, replacing former Studio Head Kelley Gilmore. Fergusson, known for his roles at Epic Games, The Coalition, and Blizzard, is now leading the charge to ensure the successful continuation of the BioShock legacy. During a recent earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed confidence in Fergusson’s ability to elevate the franchise, highlighting that the game is progressing well and is poised to surpass consumer expectations. The next BioShock is expected to take the franchise to new heights.
What Fans Can Anticipate
Although the new BioShock is still a few years away, fans can look forward to Judas, which is likely to arrive sooner, as suggested by Zelnick. Additionally, a BioShock film adaptation is on the horizon, with Francis Lawrence, the director of The Hunger Games, set to bring the cinematic version to life once he completes his current projects.
