Switch 2 VRR Support Restricted to Handheld Use, Nintendo Confirms

Nintendo has officially addressed the confusion surrounding variable refresh rate (VRR) support on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Following inconsistencies spotted on the console’s promotional pages earlier this year, the company now states that VRR will be limited strictly to handheld mode.

According to a recent clarification, the initial information listing VRR as a general feature on the Switch 2’s website was inaccurate. Nintendo has acknowledged the error and explained that the new system will not support VRR when docked and connected to a television. The company issued an apology, confirming that this feature is currently available only while playing in handheld mode.

Future TV Support Still Uncertain

When asked whether a future firmware update might introduce VRR support for TV mode, Nintendo gave no indication that such plans are in the works. The company simply stated that there is currently nothing to announce regarding this possibility.

This announcement follows a period of confusion sparked in April, when references to VRR were briefly visible across various Switch 2 support pages before quietly disappearing. These references vanished from multiple regional websites in the weeks that followed, contributing to growing speculation among fans and analysts.

Comparisons to Other Console Updates

While this news may be disappointing for players hoping to enjoy VRR on their TVs with the new console, the situation may still evolve. Other platforms, such as the PlayStation 5, introduced VRR via post-launch firmware updates—suggesting Nintendo could follow a similar route in the future.

Performance Boosts and Stock Availability

In related Switch 2 developments, Nintendo has announced a set of existing titles that will receive free performance enhancements on the new console. Games such as Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury are among those confirmed to benefit from these upgrades.

Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has assured fans that the company expects to have a sufficient supply of Switch 2 units available during the holiday season, aiming to meet consumer demand without significant shortages.
