Pathea Games has made an unexpected move by releasing Superball, a new free-to-play 3v3 arcade hero football game now available on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Known for titles like My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock, the studio has surprised fans with a game reminiscent of Rocket League and Overwatch, combining large-scale sports arenas with hero character dynamics.
A Unique Blend of Gaming Styles
Superball was unveiled during the ID@Xbox and IGN Showcase, showcasing a thrilling mix of Rocket League’s iconic ball and arena style with the strategic hero elements akin to Overwatch. In this game, players can choose from 17 characters, each fitting into one of three distinct roles: goalkeepers, midfielders, and forwards. Goalkeepers are sturdy and defensive, midfielders offer balanced gameplay with agility on both offense and defense, while forwards are the aggressive scorers, laser-focused on netting goals.
From Concept to Release
Initially conceived as ‘Super Buckyball Tournament,’ Superball has been in development since 2019. After numerous delays and testing phases, it finally emerged in July 2024. Lead producer Guo Yuheng expressed excitement about launching the game, acknowledging the community’s support throughout its evolution. Superball transformed from a PvP mech combat game to a polished football-inspired experience, fueled by the team’s creative vision. Superball has officially launched for players to engage and contribute to its future development. Although currently exclusive to PC and Xbox Series, potential releases on PlayStation and Nintendo are not ruled out.
Game Modes and Progression
In addition to its primary 3v3 mode, Superball offers four additional gameplay modes: Slam Dunk, Dodgeball, Icebreaker, and Divine Path. As a free-to-play live service game, it debuts with a Season 1 battle pass. Players have 72 hours from sign-up to access the majority of heroes, after which characters must be unlocked through gameplay. Superball is also available on Xbox Game Pass, offering another avenue for players to experience the game.
