According to Capcom, Street Fighter 6 has sold over 5 million copies globally. This is a very sharp rise from the earlier milestone of 4 million in September 2024. The latest sales surge has been attributed to the game now being available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
New Console Brings New Things
To help expand the player base of the game, Street Fighter 6 is a launch title for Switch 2, published by Capcom. This edition has new unique game modes and mechanics designed for the Joy-Con 2’s motion controls. A major highlight of the Switch 2 version is cross-play support, which helps enhance the matchmaking pool and keep a healthy online community alive.
Capcom noted that these improvements helped broaden the game’s global reach, which responsibly contributed directly to sales of 5 million units.
Growth on Track, but Ambitions Remain High
As of January 2024, which was around seven months after the game’s original release, it had sold 3 million copies. Although Capcom thinks the title is performing to expectations, its long-term sales goal appears to be set much higher than what they’re currently seeing.
Before it launched, Capcom said it was looking to beat Street Fighter 5’s lifetime sales and had set its sights on a target of more than 10 million units sold in total. Capcom has not disclosed the budget for making this game, however, the target which is so ambitious certainly shows that the publisher has long term plans for the evolution of Street Fighter 6.
How Street Fighter 6 Stacks Up Against the Franchise
When looking at previous entries in the series, Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the SNES sold 4.1 million units, which is not far from the 6.3 million for the original Street Fighter 2. So far, street fighter 5 has sold approximately 7.8 million copies. With 5 streams sold so far, Street Fighter 6 seems set to chart a promising course. But it still has a long way to go if it wants to eclipse its predecessor.
Mortal Kombat 1 is the competitor combined in sales with Street Fighter 6. Mortal Kombat 1, which came out in September 2023, has also sold 5 million units. The recent entry of Mortal Kombat became a disappointing commercial success, which forced the developers to move on to the next project. Overall, Mortal Kombat remains the best-selling franchise in the fighting genre, usually outselling Street Fighter and Tekken in total sales.
New dlc fighters coming out next.
Capcom is still pouring money to the Street Fighter 6 project as it enters its third year. A new wave of downloadable fighters has been announced.
Sagat will be in the summer of 2025. Viper scheduled for autumn.
Alex is coming in early spring 2026. Ingrid is launching in late spring 2026. This was revealed via a trailer that featured pro wrestler Kenny Omega playing as the characters in costume. What a fun little twist!
Continued Momentum for a Fan-Favourite
Street Fighter 6 is poised to play a major role in Capcom’s fighting game strategy. It is designed specifically for the masses to broaden accessibility through crossplay and console specific enhancements with a growing roster of characters and platforms support. It is too early to tell if it will break the ten million mark. However, for now, it seems the title is doing very well in the competition.
