Exciting news for Steam Deck aficionados: a new feature that many have been eagerly anticipating has finally arrived. Now, gamers can enjoy downloading games using the handheld PC system in a convenient low-power mode.
Previously, downloads required the screen to stay active, but Valve has changed the game. Steam Deck now allows players to “complete all active downloads in a new display-off low-power mode, before going to sleep.” This feature is automatically enabled when plugged in, but users can also activate it by navigating to Settings > Power when operating on battery.
How the New Download Feature Works
Valve outlines two methods to access these display-off downloads. When Steam Deck begins downloading content, pressing the power button will now prompt a dialog asking if you wish to continue downloading with the screen off. By selecting Continue, the device enters the new low-power download mode. Additionally, this mode activates automatically after a period of inactivity.
While in this mode, interacting with the device by pressing a button or moving it brings up a status screen showing download progress. Users can then decide to fully wake the device or allow it to finish downloading in low-power mode.
At present, the feature is available to users in the Beta and Preview channels, but it is anticipated to be accessible to all users soon.
