Square Enix Embraces AI Revolution, Aiming for 70% Automated QA by 2027
Embracing the future, Square Enix is venturing into the world of artificial intelligence to revolutionize video game development. With ambitious plans set for 2027, the renowned publisher is setting its sights on harnessing AI to streamline pivotal development processes.
The AI Vision for Square Enix
In a recent earnings report, Square Enix unveiled its Medium-Term Business Plan, emphasizing the integration of AI to spur long-term growth. This strategic push involves collaboration with the Matsu Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, focusing on making game development more efficient through AI advancements.
Automating the QA Process
The joint research aims to automate 70% of Quality Assurance (QA) and debugging tasks by the close of 2027. This initiative promises to enhance QA operations efficiency and secure a competitive edge in game development. Currently, the research team comprises over 10 individuals, including experts from the Matsu-Iwasawa Laboratory and Square Enix engineers.
Industry-Wide AI Adoption
While Square Enix embarks on its AI journey, other industry giants have already embraced this technology. Reports suggest that EA has been integrating AI into QA processes, which previously resulted in significant layoffs as AI began handling tasks traditionally performed by human testers. Prominent figures like Masahiro Sakurai and Hideo Kojima echo this sentiment, advocating for AI’s role in sustaining large-scale game development and alleviating repetitive tasks to prioritize creativity.
