Sony Unveils Exclusive, Budget-Friendly Japanese PS5 for Local Market

Sony is gearing up to release a unique PlayStation 5 Digital Edition exclusively for Japan, offering a more affordable option for Japanese gamers. This strategic move was highlighted during the State of Play Japan broadcast, marking an exciting development for the PlayStation community in the region.

A New PS5 Model for Japan

The newly announced PS5 Digital Edition features an 825GB storage and is priced at 55,000 yen, roughly translating to $350. Scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, this model aims to provide a cost-effective alternative for PlayStation enthusiasts in Japan.

This release follows in the footsteps of Nintendo, which earlier this year introduced a Japanese language-only Switch 2 at a similarly discounted rate.

Comparing PlayStation Models

For those keeping track, the base PS5 with a disc drive is currently priced at $549.99 in the U.S., while the digital-only version stands at $499.99. The PS5 Pro tops the list at $749.99. Notably, all these models experienced a price hike in the U.S. as of August. Sony’s introduction of a more affordable PS5 model in Japan is a strategic maneuver to bolster console sales and widen the PlayStation user base in the region.

Announcing More Than Just Consoles

Alongside the new PS5, Sony unveiled additional hardware during the State of Play Japan. A 27-inch PlayStation Monitor boasting VRR support and a DualSense charging hook was also revealed. Moreover, fans of FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign will be thrilled to hear about its first DLC launch set for next month.
