Sony is embracing a strategy reminiscent of Nintendo’s approach with its console variations, launching a Japanese-language-only PS5. Following in the footsteps of Nintendo’s region-specific Switch 2, Sony’s new PS5 model will be sold exclusively in Japan and will only support Japanese. This move aligns with the company’s efforts to offer a more affordable option for Japanese consumers, providing a budget-friendly choice compared to the standard version.
Details of the New Japan-Exclusive PS5
At the recent State of Play Japan event, Sony surprised attendees with the announcement of this Japan-only PS5 console, rather than unveiling a new game. For the Japanese market, this exclusive model aims to capture the interest of those yet to dive into the PlayStation 5 experience by offering a more accessible price point. The special edition digital PS5 will debut on November 21, priced at ¥55,000 ($355), while a standard digital PS5 in Japan is currently ¥72,980 ($475).
This significantly cheaper price makes the Japanese market the best place to purchase a PS5 right now. Although it’s pricier than the console’s ¥39,980 ($260) launch price in 2020, it provides a balance between the original price and the current global pricing after previous increases.
Future Implications for Sony
The introduction of this cost-effective digital PS5 could potentially serve as a testbed for similar strategies with upcoming Sony devices, such as the PS5 Pro. The company’s decision to offer a regional price cut reflects a broader effort to broaden the PS5’s appeal and penetrate deeper into the Japanese market.
