The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has taken a significant step against Rockstar Games following the abrupt dismissal of 31 Edinburgh-based employees and three from Canada. The terminations, attributed to ‘gross misconduct’ due to alleged information leaks, are challenged by the workers who argue that the move was an attempt to thwart their unionization efforts, as they had reached a legal threshold for organizing.
Union Accuses Rockstar of Union Busting
The IWGB perceives Rockstar’s actions as clear union busting. In response to the dismissals, protests were organized outside Rockstar North’s headquarters, urging the company to reinstate the workers. These employees expressed a desire to return and contribute to the ongoing development of Grand Theft Auto VI, now slated for a November 19, 2026 release. However, Rockstar’s refusal to engage in discussions has prompted the union to file a formal legal claim.
Legal Claims and Allegations
According to IWGB’s legal team, the employees’ dismissals are seen as victimization connected to trade union activities. Despite efforts to negotiate with Rockstar, the company has continued to terminate union members. The union has now issued formal legal claims, accusing Rockstar of trade union victimization and blacklisting. IWGB President Alex Marshall emphasized the legal protections for union members and warned that such actions would not be tolerated.

While a legal claim is distinct from a lawsuit and serves as an informal attempt to resolve the issue out of court, failure to settle might lead the IWGB and the former employees to pursue a lawsuit. This prolonged process may leave some workers seeking employment elsewhere in the interim.
