Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Reveals Unfinished Plans for GTA 5 Single-Player Trevor DLC

Grand Theft Auto enthusiasts have been intrigued by the idea of a single-player expansion for GTA 5, where Trevor would take on the role of a secret agent. This tantalizing prospect was part of Rockstar Games’ initial plans, though it eventually succumbed to the massive success of GTA Online.

The Lost Chapter of Trevor’s Story

Last year, the anticipation grew when voice actor Steven Ogg revealed that Rockstar intended to craft a story expansion centered on Trevor. Joined by co-stars Ned Luke and Shawn Fonteno, Ogg offered insights during a questions and answers session. They shared details about the scrapped DLC, which would have seen Trevor as a Federal Investigation Bureau agent. “Originally they were gonna do continuing stories of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor,” Luke stated, with Ogg elaborating on the intriguing concept of “James Bond Trevor.” However, despite some scenes being shot, the project was ultimately shelved.

Inside Rockstar’s Decision

In another revelation, Joe Robino, a former senior camera artist at Rockstar, discussed the cancellation of the GTA 5 story DLC. Speaking with a YouTube channel, Robino noted that the focus shifted to Red Dead Redemption 2, leaving the DLC unfinished but not entirely wasted, as some elements transitioned into GTA Online. “It was really really good. But when GTA Online came out it was so much of a cash cow and people were loving it so much that it was hard to make an argument that a standalone DLC would outcompete that,” Robino admitted.

Dan Houser, Rockstar Games co-founder, recently addressed this elusive DLC, indicating that if the company had pursued it, Red Dead Redemption 2 might never have been made. “It was about half done when it got abandoned. But I think if that had come out, we probably wouldn’t have gotten to make Red Dead 2. So, there are always compromises,” Houser mentioned in a podcast.

The Future of GTA and DLC

GTA fans have long desired single-player DLC after its success in previous titles. Houser expresses his fondness for single-player expansions and aims to explore such ventures with Absurd Ventures. The community now wonders about Rockstar’s strategy for the upcoming GTA 6. Will the focus be on story-driven DLC or an expanded version of GTA Online? Meanwhile, Steven Ogg, the face behind Trevor, remains indifferent to GTA 6, despite his character’s crucial role in the series’ history.

With Dan Houser also touching on other unfinished Rockstar projects, like the PS3 exclusive Agent, and his thoughts on the GTA series’ setting, the gaming world eagerly anticipates Rockstar’s next move.
