PS5 Hits 84.2 Million Shipments; Ghost of Yōtei Sells 3.3 Million in Debut Month

Sony has released its Q2 2025 financial report, highlighting significant milestones and achievements. The PlayStation 5 continues to make waves in the gaming industry with impressive shipment numbers, although it still trails behind the PS4’s historical sales figures. Additionally, the launch of the new Ghost of Yōtei game has provided a substantial boost to software sales this quarter.

PS5 Shipments and Sales Performance

Sony’s PS5 has now reached a remarkable 84.2 million units shipped as of Q2 2025. In the recent quarter alone, 3.9 million units found their way into the hands of gamers worldwide, edging out last year’s Q2 total of 3.8 million consoles. Despite these strong numbers, the PS5 remains behind the PS4 when aligning their launch dates, a gap attributed to various market factors. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox is grappling with its least successful console generation since the original Xbox release.

Game Sales on the Rise

Full game software sales surged this quarter, with 80.3 million units sold in Q2 2025, compared to 77.7 million in Q2 2024. First-party titles contributed significantly, with sales increasing from 5.3 million units last year to 6.3 million units this year. A major contributor to this success is the release of Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch, which sold 3.3 million units within just 32 days. Despite trailing slightly behind Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei’s performance remains impressive. This difference is understandable given the game’s release during a period with fewer PS5s in circulation compared to the PS4’s larger install base during Tsushima’s launch.

The game might also expand with a potential DLC and a Legends multiplayer mode set to debut next year.

PlayStation Network Engagement

Sony’s financial report also revealed a rise in monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, increasing from 116 million in Q2 2024 to 119 million in Q2 2025. This growth indicates a healthy and expanding user base engaged with Sony’s digital ecosystem.
