NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang Challenges Elon Musk’s Ambitious Chip Fab Plans, Calls TSMC’s Work “Extremely Hard”

NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has weighed in on Elon Musk’s ambitious vision of building a chip fabrication plant. Musk’s proposal aims to support Tesla’s custom chip demands, but Huang believes matching the capabilities of TSMC is a monumental challenge.

Elon Musk’s Grand Plan for Chip Fabrication

Recently, Elon Musk shared with his shareholders a bold strategy to establish a colossal chip facility to bolster Tesla’s custom chip ambitions, like the AI5. His goal is to eventually produce an astounding one million chips monthly. This announcement followed the approval of Musk’s $1 trillion pay package. However, Jensen Huang, while in Taiwan, responded to this audacious idea by highlighting the complexities involved.

Building advanced chip manufacturing is extremely hard. It’s not just build the plant, but the engineering, the science and the artistry of doing what TSMC does for a living is extremely hard.

Musk’s plan emerges from concerns that current chip suppliers like TSMC and Samsung might not meet Tesla’s growing needs. Tesla’s venture into chip manufacturing, dubbed “TeraFab”, could require investments of ‘hundreds of billions’.

NVIDIA’s Strategic Ties with TSMC

Jensen Huang is currently in Taiwan, engaging with TSMC executives about the supply chain dynamics. TSMC plays a crucial role in NVIDIA’s AI initiatives, powering the company’s groundbreaking advancements as its primary semiconductor supplier. This alliance illustrates the significant challenge in rivaling TSMC, which partners with every major computing firm globally.

As the demand for chips grows, Tesla seeks vast production capacity to fuel its automotive and robotics divisions. Opportunities abound for companies like Samsung and Intel, eager to expand their high-end chip market share. While Tesla’s TeraFab ambition presents significant hurdles, Elon Musk’s track record of achieving seemingly impossible feats remains a testament to the potential success of this venture.
