Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, recently announced an update to address a surprising image in its newly-released The Simpsons season. The image, found at Moe’s Tavern, shows Apu Nahasapeemapetilon with an inaccurate light-colored skin tone, unlike his typical portrayal.
Image Oversight at Moe’s Tavern
Fans quickly noticed the discrepancy this week, spotting Apu depicted with the same yellow skin tone as fellow characters Barney, Homer, and Principal Skinner in a barbershop quartet image. However, Apu is correctly represented in other images within the same setting.
As bad as this looks, I’m pretty sure this was an oversight. He’s on a different picture presented correctly https://t.co/Rqyy5o79p3 pic.twitter.com/Q6mS2aV4XJ

Amid rumors of an intentional alteration to the character, Epic Games clarified the situation. In a social media update, they stated, “This wasn’t intentional, it’s being adjusted in our next release.” The misrepresentation of Apu was not deliberate, and a correction is planned for the next update.
Apu’s Controversial Past
Apu’s character in The Simpsons has been the subject of controversy, especially following the 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu, which highlighted the character’s portrayal as a racist stereotype. This led to Hank Azaria, a long-time voice actor for the show, stepping down from voicing Apu. Since then, Apu has appeared without dialogue.
Fortnite’s Eventful Future
The launch of The Simpsons season in Fortnite has been met with enthusiasm, driving a rise in player numbers. Fans have appreciated the creative incorporation of Springfield, though there has been some disappointment regarding the introduction of new Sidekick cosmetics, which require additional purchases for customization. Looking ahead, Fortnite gears up for a significant event on November 29, marking the close of The Simpsons’ mini-season and the beginning of Chapter Seven, which is anticipated to include a Quentin Tarantino crossover.
