Nintendo Switches Up Samus’ Voice for Metroid Prime 4, Replacing Mass Effect’s Jennifer Hale
In an unexpected twist, the credits of Metroid Prime 4 have unveiled a major change: the iconic voice of Samus Aran has been handed over to a new talent. This comes as a surprise to many fans who have come to associate the character with the familiar voice they’ve heard in previous installments.
A New Voice for Samus
Throughout the years, numerous actors have brought Samus to life, but Jennifer Hale has been the most prominent voice behind the bounty hunter’s exclamations in Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3. Fans speculated that she would reprise her role in the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4. However, reports suggest that the game’s credits now list Erin Yvette as Samus’ voice. Yvette, known for her roles as Snow White in The Wolf Among Us and Alex in Oxenfree, brings a fresh sound to the character.
For those playing Metroid Prime 4, Samus’ grunts may sound familiar due to Yvette’s extensive voice work, including her current role as Blonde Blazer in Dispatch.
Nintendo’s Shift in Voice Talent
In recent years, Nintendo has shaken up its roster of voice talent, leading to changes for several beloved characters. This includes the replacement of Charles Martinet, the long-time voice of Mario and Luigi. Samantha Kelly, who voiced Princess Peach and Toad, also faced a sudden transition upon the release of Nintendo Switch 2 when Mario Kart World launched without her voice. Similarly, Takashi Nagasako, who voiced Donkey Kong for over two decades, has been replaced as well.
Hale, in a recent discussion, shared insights into her past work as Samus and revealed the mysteries surrounding her potential involvement in Metroid Prime 4. She confessed to having no recollection of participating in the game’s development, highlighting the secretive nature of the industry where projects are often codenamed.
While Hale’s portrayal of Samus was limited to non-verbal expressions, she always envisioned a full voice for the character, emphasizing the unique nature of each character’s vocal expressions.
Jennifer Hale’s Legacy and Future
Jennifer Hale is renowned for voicing numerous iconic characters across various games, including Rivet in Ratchet and Clank, Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid, and Rosalind Lutece in BioShock Infinite. Yet, it is her portrayal in Mass Effect that remains most memorable. Despite not being contacted for Mass Effect 5, Hale expressed her eagerness to return if approached by BioWare.
As for Metroid Prime 4, the game received a strong reception, despite not all new elements resonating with fans, it marked a solid return to form, boasting an impressive score of 8/10.
