The gaming world received exciting news today as Nintendo unveiled its financial achievements for 2025’s first half, spanning April to September. The highlight? The Nintendo Switch 2’s record-breaking sales, exceeding expectations and outpacing its predecessor with remarkable speed.
Stellar Performance of the Nintendo Switch 2
As of September 30, the Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved an impressive milestone, selling 10.36 million units. This staggering figure surpasses the original Switch’s early sales, which took roughly ten months to reach similar numbers. In tandem with the hardware success, software sales for the Switch 2 have reached 20.62 million units, averaging nearly two games per console.
Mario Kart World, a highly anticipated exclusive launch title, dominated software sales, boasting 9.57 million units sold. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong Bananza also captured gamers’ attention, with 3.49 million units sold from July to September.
Revised Forecast Amidst Challenges
Buoyed by these encouraging figures, Nintendo has adjusted its initial forecast upward. The company now predicts that 19 million Nintendo Switch 2 units will be sold by the fiscal year’s close in March 2026, surpassing the earlier conservative estimate of 15 million. If Nintendo achieves this, it will be a significant feat, especially given the backdrop of US tariffs impacting the market. DFC Intelligence, for instance, had initially revised its prediction downward from 17 million to 15 million units because of these challenges.
Comparative Sales and Future Outlook
During this reporting period, the original Nintendo Switch managed to sell 1.89 million hardware units and an impressive 61.56 million software units. However, forecasts for the older console have been slightly reduced, with a new estimate of 4 million units for the full year, down from 4.5 million. The bright spot remains in software sales, which are now expected to hit 125 million copies, an increase from the previous 105 million forecast.
Since its debut in March 2017, the original Nintendo Switch has sold a total of 154 million units. Though it’s unlikely to surpass Sony’s PlayStation 2, which holds the title of the best-selling console with 160.6 million units, Nintendo’s momentum with the Switch 2 suggests a prosperous future.
