Nintendo Boosts Hardware Forecast as Switch 2 Sales Reach 10.36 Million, Extending Record as Biggest Console Launch Ever

The Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved a monumental milestone, selling an impressive 10.36 million units between June 5 and September 30. This extraordinary success has solidified its status as the largest console launch in history.

Following this remarkable achievement, Nintendo has adjusted its annual hardware forecast, anticipating that 19 million units of the new console will be sold by the end of March 2026. This sales figure not only surpasses the initial launch of the original Switch, which sold 4.7 million units in its first half-year, but it also outpaces the PlayStation 5’s noteworthy debut of 7.8 million units, despite PS5’s limited stock availability at the time.

Nintendo Switch 2 Game Sales Boom

The flagship game for the Switch 2, Mario Kart World, has sold 9.57 million copies, with a significant 8.1 million of those coming from the console’s bundle deal. Interestingly, over a million enthusiasts opted to purchase it separately for $80. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong Bananza, another key title for the Switch 2, has reached 3.49 million in sales since its July release, and Super Mario Party Jamboree saw 1.16 million units sold between April 1 and September 30, benefiting from its Switch 2 Edition release in July. Notably, Nintendo has not yet differentiated between Switch 1 and Switch 2 sales data for this title.

Though not included in the latest data, Pokémon Legends Z-A has made a strong debut, selling 5.8 million copies within its launch week. This performance positions it as a prospective top seller in future Nintendo reports.

Continued Success for the Original Switch

Surprisingly, the original Switch title, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, continues to thrive, with an additional 1.37 million units sold in the past six months. The Nintendo Switch has reached 154 million in total sales, poised just 10,000 units shy of surpassing the Nintendo DS as Nintendo’s top-selling device. The looming question is whether the Switch can reach the prestigious milestone of overtaking Sony’s PlayStation 2, the reigning champion of console sales. Nintendo projects that the Switch will have accumulated 156 million units sold by March 2026, bringing it tantalizingly close.
