Frostpunk franchise to expand following 11 Bit Studios’ record-breaking year

11 Bit Studios experienced an extraordinary financial performance in 2024, achieving their highest annual sales to date. The company reported revenue of PLN 140.54 million (approximately £28.21 million), representing a remarkable 168.9% increase compared to the previous year. This impressive growth was predominantly attributed to the successful launch of Frostpunk 2, as outlined in their investor report.

The company disclosed that the substantial revenue surge resulted largely from new title releases, with Frostpunk 2 being the primary driver. By December 2024’s end, the game had sold 592,000 copies, generating PLN 69.73 million (around £14 million) in revenue. Przemysław Marszał, the management board president, highlighted this achievement in the financial disclosures.

Established titles continue to bolster sales

While the sequel contributed significantly to overall sales, earlier titles including the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine also played important roles in the company’s strong performance. These established games collectively generated PLN 35.75 million (roughly £7.18 million), showing a 13.7% year-on-year increase. The renewed interest in the original Frostpunk likely stemmed from anticipation surrounding its sequel.

New Frostpunk project confirmed for 2027

Capitalising on Frostpunk 2’s momentum, 11 Bit Studios has officially confirmed plans for further franchise expansion. The company announced intentions to commence production on a new title within the Frostpunk universe, tentatively scheduled for release as early as 2027. The studio expressed aims to diversify both scope and timeline of their projects, while simultaneously pursuing promising short-term financial opportunities.

Beyond developing the next installment, the studio committed to ongoing support for Frostpunk 2 through downloadable content and additional features, ensuring continued engagement with their growing player base.

Financial challenges amidst record sales

Despite achieving unprecedented sales figures, 11 Bit Studios fell short of meeting all financial targets. The substantial revenue increase did not translate to improved profit margins. The company reported an operating loss of PLN 2.84 million (approximately £570,000), reflecting the substantial costs and challenges associated with development and production.

Marszał characterised the year as one filled with intense effort, difficult decisions, and valuable lessons. He acknowledged the setbacks but emphasised that the team gained meaningful insights from their experiences. With measured optimism, he indicated that the company enters the new year expecting notable improvements in both operational efficiency and financial outcomes.

Bright future ahead for the survival city-builder series

The confirmation of another Frostpunk title has generated significant excitement within the gaming community. Despite facing a competitive landscape and internal challenges, the prospect of another survival city-builder from 11 Bit Studios has sparked considerable anticipation for what awaits in 2027. With ongoing updates planned for Frostpunk 2 and a new chapter in development, the studio appears well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory.
