As a user of Dual Blades in Monster Hunter Wilds, I enjoy fast, rapid-fire attacks as well as demon mode which turns my hunter into a demon that launches at monsters. However, there’s one mechanic that causes a lot of trouble, and that is the accidental slide which makes my hunter zoom past the target.
Sliding is a returning mechanic that has divided the monster hunter community across multiple game entries. Accidental slides can be annoying but if you learn how to use them with some weapons and skills, you can become a better hunter.

How Sliding Works in Monster Hunter Wilds
There are several ways to trigger a slide, but the most often seen is when an object is run or rolled down steep slopes. Observe your hunter’s animation when going down hills, for he will first try to balance himself before beginning to slide. To start the slide more quickly, just roll while running down the hill.
When weapon attacks occur on slopes, they can trigger sliding too. Interestingly, animation of your hunter sliding during the move doesn’t meet the requirement for the mechanic. Weapons that can initiate slides include.
- Charge Blade’s Forward Slash.
- Demon Flurry Rush from the Dual Blades
- Gunlance’s Lunging Upthrust.
- Hammer’s Charge.
- Lance’s Dash Attack.
- Advancing Slash of Sword & Shield.
Every weapon has unique sliding actions available. Some are simple air attacks and can easily be mounted. Others like the Sword & Shield have multiple options and follow-ups. The Dual Blades allow for impressive aerial maneuvers, allowing for a spin down the monster back for major damage.
Becoming a Sliding Expert
To sliding successfully, you must learn what grade of terrain will activate the mechanic. The slope at the back of The Training Area is a perfect place to practice While exploring or hunting, try rolling down hills of various degrees to build up a practical knowledge which will prevent yourself from sliding down when it counts. Many hunters know the frustration of slipping off the desert sand dunes on Windward Plains while fighting Arch-Tempered Rey Diaz.
After you start to control your slides, think about using your slide as a weapon. With the Affinity Sliding skill, your effectiveness in battle when sliding massively increases, getting a whopping 30% Affinity boost for 30 seconds. It doesn’t matter if your build has a high Affinity or needs improvement.
The main downside is that Affinity Sliding is a Buttery Leathercraft Group Skill, which comes with some not-so-great armor pieces. If hunting in hilly country and wanting to maximise Affinity, this technique can provide benefits. Keep in mind the buff will activate only after you will slide for one second so trigger it before closing the distance.
Sliding may feel like an annoying mechanic at first. After all, overshooting your target and needing to climb back uphill can be annoying. However, learning what triggers a slide and the benefits behind it can help you significantly on the hunt.
