Malaysia Captures Victory in Magic Chess: Go Go’s SEA Games 2025 Debut

The vibrant atmosphere of the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand was heightened this year with the debut of a new esports sensation, Magic Chess: Go Go (MCGG). Sanctioned by the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF), this multi-sport event showcased the strategic brilliance required in this globally acclaimed game, which only launched in May.

Magic Chess: Go Go Shines at SEA Games

MCGG made a significant impact at the SEA Games with an exhilarating showmatch featuring teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Although it wasn’t a medal event, the competition captured the attention of audiences. Each nation was represented by two players, competing across five matches to achieve the highest average standings. Malaysia emerged victorious, thanks to a crucial match win by Muhamad Arif Bin Baharun.

“I was excited to be part of the MCGG at the 33rd SEA Games, as it is the dream of every MCGG player,” shared Arif Bin Baharun. “We have been playing this game and training hard to be part of it. This shows that everyone has a chance, and I hope that our participation motivates everyone who watched us.” Following Malaysia, Indonesia secured second place, while Thailand completed the podium.

MOONTON’s Commitment to Esports

The inclusion of MCGG marks the first time an auto-chess title has graced the SEA Games, a testament to the growing popularity of esports, which first appeared as a discipline in 2019. MCGG’s developer, MOONTON, has been pivotal in expanding the game’s esports landscape. The game, featuring characters from the hit Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, has also announced its inaugural world championship set for January 25th at the MLBB’s M7 Carnival.

SEA Games 2025 Continues With Esports Medal Events

The SEA Games 2025 promises even more excitement with four games across six medal events: Arena of Valour, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Free Fire, and FC Online. MLBB and Arena of Valor will host separate tournaments for male and female players, each offering two gold medals. Scheduled from December 13th to 19th, the Philippines aims to build on its esports success, while Indonesia seeks to climb to the top with its 13 medals.
