Legendary game developer John Romero, famed for his involvement in creating Doom, has shared exciting news about his upcoming venture. Although an earlier shooter project was shelved, Romero has kept its spirit alive in a fresh and intriguing new game.
The studio he co-founded with Brenda Romero, Romero Games, faced significant challenges this summer. Reports suggest that a major funding withdrawal by Microsoft led to heartbreaking cuts, impacting various projects, including Everwild, Perfect Dark, and other undisclosed titles. Yet, the Romeros did not lose hope, confirming they were exploring new publisher opportunities for their mysterious first-person shooter.
A New Vision Rising
Speaking at the Salón del Videojuego de Madrid, John Romero expressed his triumph over the cancellation of a major game, thrilling the audience. Despite the new project having no direct links to the previous one, it draws heavily from its predecessor’s concepts.
Romero explained, “We have 50 million worth of a game. We can take pieces out and put them into a brand new indie game.” This new game promises to harness the creativity and expertise of a smaller, passionate team.
Innovative Gameplay Awaits
Though details remain under wraps, Romero teases that his latest shooter will offer unprecedented experiences. He emphasizes that the gameplay will deliver a fresh sensation, much like the awe of exploring the vast and unique world of Elden Ring. He remarked on the newness and excitement of the experience he’s crafting, hinting at a distinctive journey for players.
