Jennifer Hale Eager to Reprise Bayonetta Role Despite Past Challenges

Jennifer Hale, renowned for her role as Commander Shepard, finds herself in the spotlight once again due to the controversial casting decision surrounding Bayonetta 3. The decision by PlatinumGames to replace the original voice actor, Hellena Taylor, with Hale stirred significant debate, with Hale admitting, “I definitely got thrown under the bus by that whole thing.”

Before the release of the third installment in Hideki Kamiya’s action-packed series, it was announced that Taylor would not return as Bayonetta, with Hale taking up the mantle instead.

The Casting Controversy

PlatinumGames cited various overlapping reasons for Taylor not reprising her role, leading them to audition and subsequently choose Jennifer Hale, believing her to be an ideal fit for the character.

In 2022, a series of videos released by Taylor on Twitter claimed she was only offered $4,000 to voice Bayonetta in the new game. Taylor urged fans to boycott the game, suggesting they donate to charity instead.

Reports later emerged contradicting Taylor’s claims, suggesting that the actual offer was between $15,000 for multiple sessions. Taylor eventually acknowledged the $15,000 offer but contested other details of the reports.

Faced with growing scrutiny and online harassment, Hale issued a statement, limited by non-disclosure agreements, to address the situation.

Jennifer Hale’s Perspective

As Hale considers the possibility of reprising her role as Bayonetta, she remains reflective yet honest, expressing her eagerness to return despite the difficulties she faced. “I definitely got thrown under the bus by that whole thing, and I was unable to speak on my own behalf because I was under not one but two NDAs. Eventually, I was allowed to make a statement, which I appreciated, and I was able to present the facts,” Hale explained in an interview with sources. There were some things said [that were] presented as facts, but were false. I would have never taken a role otherwise. She emphasized her thorough vetting process before accepting the role and her trust in the director.

Despite the challenges, Hale found the experience of playing Bayonetta enjoyable and was welcomed warmly by the community once the controversy subsided.

Looking Forward

Beyond Bayonetta, Hale expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the Mass Effect universe. She eagerly awaits any opportunity to reprise her role as Commander Shepard, declaring she “would be there before they finish the sentence” if asked. Known for her portrayal of “FemShep,” Hale’s love for the universe is undiminished, and she welcomed the chance to return in any capacity.

Even if her role as Shepard isn’t revived, just stepping back into that world would delight her.
