IEM Kraków 2026: A New Chapter for Counter-Strike Esports

The Intel Extreme Masters (IEM), a cornerstone of competitive Counter-Strike, will transition its flagship event from Katowice to Kraków, Poland, in 2026. Organised by ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) and Intel, this renowned esports circuit, with nearly two decades of history, is set to make waves in a new city. The first IEM Kraków event is scheduled to run from 27 January to 8 February 2026, promising intense competition and a fresh vibe for fans and players alike.

A Legacy of Global Competition

Since its inception in Hannover, Germany, from 2007 to 2012, IEM has grown into a global phenomenon, hosting Counter-Strike tournaments in cities like Cologne, Melbourne, Rio, Dallas, and Chengdu. Katowice has been the heart of IEM since 2013, drawing massive crowds and global attention. In January 2025, the Katowice event saw Team Vitality claim victory, with nearly 1.3 million fans tuning in to watch them dominate the $1 million prize pool. The shift to Kraków marks a bold new step for this storied competition.

Why Kraków?

The decision to move to Kraków stems from a multi-year partnership between EFG and the city. This deal positions IEM Kraków as a recurring highlight in the Counter-Strike esports calendar, ensuring long-term excitement for fans. The move is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Kraków, much like Katowice, which saw an economic boost of over £14 million from IEM in 2019, according to EFG reports. The influx of tourists and global viewership will likely transform Kraków into a vibrant esports hub.

Interestingly, the announcement of IEM Kraków led to the sudden cancellation of a planned PGL event in the city in January 2027, hinting at the strategic weight of this new partnership.

A Glimpse into IEM Kraków 2026

The inaugural IEM Kraków will see 24 elite teams battle for a hefty $1.25 million prize pool. Only six squads will advance to the Playoff stage, where they’ll fight for the chance to hoist the first-ever IEM Kraków trophy. The final three days of the event will unfold at the iconic Tauron Arena, promising a thrilling atmosphere for attendees.

For those visiting Kraków, the trophy will be on display at Galeria Krakowska from 30 May to 2 June 2026, offering fans a chance to get up close. From 8 June, it will move to Kraków City Hall for a two-week exhibition, adding to the city’s esports fever.

A Bright Future for Esports in Kraków

Michal Blicharz, EFG’s VP of Product Development, shared enthusiasm for the move, noting that IEM’s nearly 20-year legacy is filled with unforgettable moments in esports history. He expressed excitement about continuing this journey in Kraków, where the event is set to scale up and create new memories for gamers and fans worldwide.

With its rich history and passionate fanbase, IEM Kraków 2026 is poised to redefine Counter-Strike esports, bringing top-tier competition and electric energy to a new stage. Gamers and spectators alike can look forward to an epic showdown in one of Poland’s most vibrant cities.
