Hideo Kojima Unknowingly Passed on The Matrix Game Opportunity

Hideo Kojima recently expressed his surprise at discovering that he was once considered for a Matrix video game project. According to reports, no one had informed him about a discussion between the Wachowskis and Konami regarding this potential collaboration. The revelation came as a shock to Kojima, who had no knowledge of such offers ever being made.

The Missed Opportunity

Earlier remarks made by Christopher Bergstresser, a former Senior Vice President at Konami, suggested that Kojima was approached to create a game based on the iconic Matrix franchise. Addressing this on his social media, Kojima clarified that in 1999, he did exchange emails with the Wachowskis and met them during their visit to Japan. Despite these interactions, the topic of developing a Matrix game never arose in their conversations. “At that time, I was already extremely busy with MGS2 and probably couldn’t have accepted the offer right away. But if someone had told me, maybe there could’ve been a way to make it work,” Kojima remarked.

What Could Have Been

The idea of a Matrix game developed by Hideo Kojima is tantalizing for many fans. With Kojima’s innovative approach to game design, a collaboration could have led to a groundbreaking title that captured the essence of the Matrix universe. Despite the franchise’s decline in popularity since the early 2000s, a Kojima-directed game might have reignited interest and brought new dimensions to the series, which previous games have yet to achieve.
