Maps serve as crucial navigation tools in the Minecraft universe, offering players a visual overview of surrounding terrain while tracking their position. This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know about creating, activating, and maximizing the potential of maps in your adventures.
Map Fundamentals
Within Minecraft, maps function as craftable items that display terrain and the player’s location within a specific radius from where the map was first activated. Players in Survival Mode start with a default map that can be activated anywhere in the world. It’s worth noting that maps only reveal areas surrounding the activation point.
Java Edition players can only craft Empty Locator Maps, while Bedrock Edition supports crafting both Empty Maps and Empty Locator Maps.

Crafting Your First Map
Before creating a map, you’ll need to gather specific materials. The components required vary depending on which type of map you’re crafting:
For an Empty Locator Map:
- 8 sheets of Paper
- 1 Compass
For an Empty Map:
- 9 sheets of Paper
Both map types can be assembled using the crafting table with the appropriate configuration shown in the in-game recipe interface.

Activating Your Map
Map activation is a straightforward process. Hold the map in your hand and perform the platform-specific action:
- Console players should press the left trigger
- PC users need to right-click while the map is equipped
This initialization process allows the map to begin recording the surrounding landscape.
Expanding Your Map’s Range
A freshly crafted map begins at level 0 but can be upgraded all the way to level 4. Each upgrade expands the viewable area significantly. To begin upgrading, you’ll first need to construct a Cartography Table.
Cartography Table Materials:
- 4 Wood Planks
- 2 sheets of Paper
After building the Cartography Table, open it and place your map in the top-left slot with a sheet of paper in the bottom-left position. The central area will display “Zoom Out & Clear,” while the right side shows the upgraded map level.
To reach maximum level, continue adding paper and collecting the upgraded map until you achieve level 4. Each level increases the coverage area, making your map substantially more valuable for exploration and navigation throughout your Minecraft world.
