The survey, conducted by Atomik Research, engaged 306 executives from game studios in the US and the UK. A striking 72% of these respondents shared the belief that Steam holds a significant monopoly over PC game distribution. The findings have spurred discussions on the true nature of Steam’s dominance.

Debating Steam’s Monopoly Status

While the belief that Steam functions as a monopoly is widespread, the reality may be more nuanced. Reports suggest that although platforms like GOG, itch.io, and the Epic Games Store offer alternatives, Steam’s position remains overwhelmingly dominant. The survey revealed that 48% of respondents have distributed games via the Epic Games Store and the Xbox PC store, yet only a minority have used GOG or itch.io for distribution.

Exploring Alternative Markets

An interesting aspect highlighted in the survey is the perception of gray markets. Nearly a quarter of respondents view e-stores and marketplaces such as Humble and Fanatical with skepticism, associating them with loss of control and revenue. However, these alternative platforms could provide viable solutions to those looking to reduce dependency on Steam. Understanding and effectively utilizing these channels could unlock new revenue opportunities without falling prey to gray market pitfalls.
