Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Heading to Nintendo Switch 2

In an exciting announcement, Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will launch on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The revelation came from Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi during a recent Nintendo Creator’s Voice feature. He explained that the enhanced capabilities of the new console allow the game to run at full specifications, delivering an immersive experience for players.

Originally released for PlayStation 4 in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake reimagines the beloved 1997 RPG with expanded storytelling and modern gameplay. The Intergrade edition, which debuted on PlayStation 5 and PC, introduced graphical upgrades, improved lighting, and the Intermission DLC—featuring fan-favourite character Yuffie Kisaragi.

Portable Play and Enhanced Social Features

Hamaguchi highlighted the appeal of playing Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on a handheld device, noting that the Switch 2’s portability means fans can dive into Midgar anytime, anywhere—whether during a commute or while relaxing at home. He also expressed enthusiasm about the social aspects, as the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality will let players share their screens and discuss their adventures in real time.

The director shared his excitement about bringing the game to a portable system, emphasising the potential for a stronger connection between Nintendo and the Final Fantasy franchise. While only Intergrade has been officially confirmed, Hamaguchi hinted that the entire remake trilogy—including Rebirth and the yet-to-be-released final instalment—could eventually make its way to the Switch 2.

A Return to Nintendo Hardware

Interestingly, the Final Fantasy series began on Nintendo consoles before shifting to PlayStation with Final Fantasy VII in 1997, thanks to the CD-ROM format’s advantages. Now, with the remake trilogy, the iconic RPG is set to return to Nintendo hardware, bridging a decades-long gap for fans of the franchise.
