Epic Boss Tim Sweeney Suggests Steam Ditch AI Content Disclosures for Full Transparency
The conversation about the use of generative AI in video game development is intensifying. Tim Sweeney, the head of Epic Games, has entered the discussion with a bold stance: he believes Valve should eliminate its requirement for AI Generated Content Disclosure on Steam games.
The Debate Over AI Disclosures
Valve’s guidelines necessitate that developers inform players about AI-generated content on their game’s Steam store page. For instance, Arc Raiders by Embark Studios notes the use of procedural and AI tools in its creation, while Activision’s Call of Duty mentions AI assistance in developing in-game assets.
Sweeney argues that such labels are unnecessary as AI tools are becoming ubiquitous in game development. Responding to a suggestion that all digital marketplaces should drop the “Made with AI” label, Sweeney concurred, asserting that while these tags are relevant in art for authorship, they don’t make sense for game stores, where AI will soon be prevalent in almost all productions.
Impact on the Gaming Community
This stance has ignited further discussion about the implications of removing AI disclosures. Critics argue that without these disclosures, consumers might find it challenging to make informed choices. The controversy escalated when players of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 voiced concerns about AI-generated images in the game, particularly those resembling Studio Ghibli’s art style. These concerns were echoed by a U.S. Congressman, who called for stronger regulations against AI use that might replace human jobs.
I havent really looked at the Multiplayer and Zombie calling cards as closely and im willing to bet they’re using ai on those too but its only the Campaign and endgame calling cards that are this type of blatant Sora/Grok artstyle pic.twitter.com/5qmEXhoQkJ

While Sweeney poked fun by comparing AI disclosures to mandatory shampoo brand disclosures, the underlying issue remains. It’s significant when generative AI is used in creating visual art sold in premium packages. However, Valve enforces these rules not due to legal requirements but because it believes it’s appropriate for transparency.
AI’s Role and Future in Game Development
Given Fortnite’s heavy use of AI, Sweeney’s view on AI in gaming isn’t unexpected. Recently, Epic incorporated an AI Darth Vader into Fortnite, using technology to recreate the voice of the late James Earl Jones with the family’s permission, showcasing the potential of AI in gaming.
Sweeney has previously stated that AI could enable small teams to create vast, complex games akin to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He envisions a future where AI handles dialogue, allowing small teams to craft expansive and interactive worlds. The rapid evolution of AI technology suggests this vision might not be far off.
