The world of Elder Scrolls Online is about to undergo significant transformation as ZeniMax Online Studios shifts its MMORPG from the longstanding Chapter model to an innovative seasonal approach. Initially announced over a year ago, this transition planned for 2025 was marked by the introduction of the “Seasons of the Worm Cult,” which retained some elements of the previous model. However, the game will fully embrace the new Seasons model starting April 2, 2026, with the launch of “Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk.”
A New Era of Updates
The upcoming Season Zero marks a groundbreaking change as Elder Scrolls Online’s updates will debut simultaneously on PC and consoles for the first time with Update 49. This move is a crucial step towards the much-anticipated cross-play feature, although its implementation will require further development. This strategic shift aims to inject fresh excitement and variability into the game, making it more dynamic and responsive to player feedback. Game Director Nick Giacomini highlighted the constraints of the Chapter model, which limited flexibility and adaptation to community input.
Revolutionizing Content Access
In a move set to win over players, all new content from Season Zero will be available for free. The traditional barriers to accessing new Trials or dungeons are being dismantled, paving the way for an inclusive gaming experience. Each season will feature a unique “Tamriel Tome,” Elder Scrolls Online’s version of a Battle Pass, offering both free and optional premium rewards. Additionally, the Gold Coast Bazaar, a new store for earnable rewards, will let players acquire missed cosmetics using Trade Bars. The removal of Event Tickets in favor of Trade Bars further enhances this accessibility, with no cap on how many can be held.
Exciting Adventures Await
Season Zero promises an array of thrilling updates, including the Night Market, a challenging PvE zone requiring player cooperation and offering faction-based competition and rewards. Following this, Season One will introduce the new group Trial called Crimson Veldt and expand solo play options with Solo Dungeons. The introduction of multi-stage, dynamic world events, and a new Sage Vault system will add layers of engagement. Furthermore, the studio is pioneering a PvP progression system and enhancing combat visuals, starting with updates to the Dragonknight class.
Significant quality of life improvements will arrive on March 9, 2026, with Update 49, including free skill respecs, faster riding training, and increased housing limits. Additionally, developments like Guild Mail and Guild Housing are in the works, promising exciting opportunities for collaborative play in the future.
