Bungie has unveiled its roadmap for Destiny 2’s next major narrative chapter. The developer announced a comprehensive “multi-year saga” called the Fate Saga. This new storyline will commence with four expansions collectively known as the Year of Prophecy.
The journey begins on July 15, 2025, with The Edge of Fate, which will transport players to Kepler, a mysterious planetoid that raises more questions than it answers about the universe. Following this, on December 2, 2025, the Renegades expansion will be released. According to Bungie’s revised content strategy, two expansions will be released annually moving forward. This means players will experience more densely-packed content with shorter waiting periods between releases, compared to the previous 1-2 year gaps between expansions.
Major Updates Between Expansions
Bungie is introducing what they call “Major Updates” between expansions. These updates will include sandbox overhauls, new events, modifier and challenge updates, new gear, Artifact mods, and more. The first major update, Ash & Iron, part of the Season of Reclamation, will launch on September 9, 2025. Later, as part of Renegades and the Season of Lawless, the Shadow & Order update will arrive on March 3, 2026.
The most appealing aspect of these major updates is that they will be free for all Destiny 2 players and will not be removed from the game. These updates will be comparable in size to the Into the Light seasonal update, offering numerous events and new content to discover.
Year of Prophecy Continues into 2026
The roadmap extends further into 2026 with additional expansions for the Year of Prophecy. Shattered Cycle is scheduled for Summer 2026, while The Alchemist, which will conclude the Year of Prophecy, will arrive in Winter 2026.
Bungie stated they will introduce numerous new destinations, gameplay features, and bring back some fan favourites. Among the significant updates coming this July is a customizable difficulty setting for destinations.
