Originally released in 2005, Guild Wars stood out among MMORPGs with its no-subscription model and open exploration. The Reforged edition not only upgrades visuals but also incorporates subtle gameplay adjustments, ensuring that veterans can easily transition into the updated game.
Development on Guild Wars Reforged began in early 2025, with 2weeks bringing their expertise from both Guild Wars 1 and 2. Brandon Dillon, CEO of 2weeks, praised the well-maintained code and engineering culture at ArenaNet, which facilitated a swift and effective update process.
Reviving the Classic Experience
Last April’s anniversary event spotlighted Guild Wars’ enduring allure and revealed areas for improvement, like resolving a 4K monitor crash bug. The Reforged edition addresses these issues and introduces support for Steam Deck and full controller functionality.
Dillon noted that this update is about modernizing, not remastering: “For instance, the UI was really tiny on super high resolution displays, because we didn’t have anything bigger than 1024 by 768 in 2003.” The goal is to ensure Reforged works flawlessly on modern systems while retaining the original’s aesthetic. The most significant challenge was enhancing user experience on the Steam Deck and integrating controller support, a rewarding endeavor for the team.
Amidst a trend of revisiting classic games, Guild Wars Reforged arrives at a perfect time. For the developers, this update is not just about refreshing the game but also reconnecting with the vibrant world and community that made Guild Wars special.
Dillon reflected on the nostalgia of the experience, recalling the creative magic of the original team and the vast, hand-crafted world that continues to captivate players. He expressed, “Guild Wars was a very nostalgic game to play, but it was also a very nostalgic game to come back to.”
