ALGS Champion SangJoon Bids Farewell to Competitive Apex Legends

Han “SangJoon” Sang-joon, the celebrated Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) champion, has announced his retirement from competitive play after four successful years in the professional scene. The South Korean player cited upcoming mandatory military service as the primary reason for his departure.

In his online farewell message, SangJoon explained his difficult decision: “I’ve decided to retire from the next pro league. There are many reasons for this, but the biggest one is that I have to enlist in the military soon.”

Remarkable Achievements in Competitive Apex

Since beginning his professional journey in 2021, SangJoon has built an impressive resume competing with several prominent organisations. Most recently, he represented Asian teams Crazy Raccoon and REJECT.

His career reached its pinnacle when he led REJECT to victory at the 2024 ALGS Split 1 Playoffs, securing a substantial R5.5 million prize purse for his team. SangJoon’s exceptional performance earned him the prestigious MVP award for the tournament. REJECT initially placed fifth in the Group Stage before finding their rhythm in the Finals, claiming first place in games two and eight, and ultimately winning with 86 points overall.

Earlier in 2025, while competing with Crazy Raccoon, SangJoon achieved an eighth-place finish among 30 teams during the ALGS APAC North Split 1 Pro League. The team later secured 32nd place at the Mid-Season Playoffs, taking home approximately R82,500 in prize money.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

In his farewell message, SangJoon expressed genuine emotion about leaving the competitive scene: “I’ve said many times that I’m retiring, but this time it’s true, so I’m really sad that I won’t be able to see you all. Thanks for your support. I was able to go to the playoffs and win, which is really great. Thank you for everything!”

With his retirement, SangJoon will be absent from upcoming Apex Legends tournaments, including the 2025 Split 2 Pro League and Challenger Circuits scheduled between August and October, as well as the ALGS 2026 Championship set for January 15th to 18th, 2026.
