WHO WE ARE

The Spark That Started It All

Megarom was born in a smoke-filled braai room in Johannesburg circa 2010. Picture the scene: five university mates arguing over Castle Lagers about whether Demon's Souls represented the future of gaming or just pointless digital masochism. After our twentieth defeat against the Flamelurker, we had our breakthrough moment—South African gamers deserved authentic voices who understood both global gaming culture and our unique local perspective.

Today, what began as drunken debates has crystallised into the platform before you. Our small WhatsApp group has expanded into a network of critics, developers, streamers and industry insiders connected across every province in South Africa, united by one mission: delivering gaming content that speaks directly to African players without compromising on depth or quality.

Why Choose Megarom?

Important Things That Set Us Apart

The digital landscape teems with gaming websites. Absolutely bursting. With so many options vying for your attention, why should Megarom claim any of your precious scrolling time? Here's our case:

We Play Everything Properly

It sounds rather basic, but it's shockingly rare. Our cardinal rule is simple yet absolute: no Megarom writer publishes analysis without experiencing a game's complete story and meaningful side content. For service-based titles, we commit a minimum of 50 hours before forming initial impressions, then continue updating as the experience evolves.

When God of War: Ragnarök landed, our lead reviewer took two weeks of annual leave, clocked 90+ hours, and explored every realm thoroughly before drafting a single word. Obsessive? Without doubt. Authentic? Unquestionably.

Local Knowledge, Global Standards

Our contributors include lecturers from Wits University's game design programme, former developers from local studios, esports champions, and technology journalists with decades of industry access. When we discuss server performance, we understand both netcode architecture and the unique challenges of gaming on Southern African infrastructure.

Our strategy game coverage comes from writers who've been internationally ranked in titles like DOTA 2 and Starcraft II. When we discuss meta shifts or balance issues, our analysis combines professional-level experience with accessibility for casual players.

Proudly Independent

Megarom remains entirely South African-owned and operated. We answer to no foreign conglomerate, publisher pressure, or corporate overlords. Our revenue comes from transparent local advertising partnerships and our growing subscriber community who value our honesty.

When a AAA title launches with predatory monetisation or technical issues on PS5, we'll call it out directly—even if they've bought billboard space on the N1 highway. Our loyalty belongs exclusively to South African gamers, not marketing departments.

Our Core Principles

The Explorer’s Mentality

Our content philosophy centres on comprehensive understanding. We’re the sort who’ll spend sixty hours wandering the Karoo-like landscapes of Red Dead Redemption 2 before writing our analysis. Our collective gaming experience includes everything from growing up with Atari systems in Durban arcades to maintaining elaborate spreadsheets comparing frame rates across different SA internet providers.

“Gaming is South Africa’s fastest-growing entertainment medium, yet it’s still often treated as childish or trivial by mainstream media. Games represent this generation’s most revolutionary art form, blending narrative, visual art, music and interactivity in unprecedented ways. They deserve thoughtful, nuanced coverage that acknowledges this complexity.”

Technical Authority

Our technology coverage brings engineering expertise rarely found in African gaming journalism. With team members who studied computer science at UCT and Stellenbosch, we can expertly analyse performance bottlenecks, explain console limitations, and help you understand why your favourite title crashes every time there’s load-shedding.

We specialise in hardware performance under South African conditions, with particular focus on how games function during power fluctuations and on varied internet connections.

“Most gaming sites simply note that ‘the frame rate drops sometimes’ without explaining why this happens or how it impacts gameplay. We believe South African players deserve to understand what’s happening beneath the surface—especially when paying international prices for our games.”

Ubuntu Gaming

Our community philosophy stems from the uniquely African concept of ubuntu: “I am because we are.” Our earliest memories involve hauling CRT televisions to LAN parties in Pretoria suburbs. Today, we focus on nurturing inclusive gaming communities, organising tournaments that spotlight local talent, and covering multiplayer experiences through a distinctly South African lens.

A highlight of our community work was coordinating a 150-person charity stream that raised over R50,000 for school computer labs in Soweto, an initiative later recognised by PlayStation South Africa with equipment donations.

“For South Africans, gaming has always been communal—from sharing split-screen FIFA in township homes to organised esports teams competing internationally despite bandwidth challenges. Megarom aims to be your digital shisanyama—a gathering place where passion for games transcends all other differences.”

Editorial Philosophy

At Megarom, we believe gaming coverage should be accessible to newcomers without insulting the intelligence of veterans. Our content stands on three foundational principles:

Quality Over Quantity

We’d rather publish one definitive analysis than a dozen rushed impressions. While other platforms race to post day-one reviews, we invest time in truly understanding each game’s systems. Our guides don’t merely list steps—they explain core mechanics so you can solve problems independently.

When major titles like Horizon Forbidden West launch, we don’t hastily compile surface-level tips. Instead, our team spends weeks testing different playstyles, consulting with developers, and discovering unexpected strategies. The result? Resources that even international players reference for their comprehensiveness.

South African Context

Games don’t exist in isolation, and neither do South African players. Our coverage examines each title through both global and local lenses: How do international releases reflect or ignore African perspectives? How do pricing models translate to Rand values? How does latency affect online experiences for Cape Town versus Johannesburg players?

Our acclaimed series “Gaming from the South” has explored everything from representation of African settings in mainstream titles to how local indie developers navigate international markets. Because understanding our unique position enhances appreciation of the medium.

Honesty Above All

We assume our readers are discerning, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in gaming culture. We refuse to manufacture controversy for traffic or soften criticism to maintain industry access. Our headlines accurately represent content rather than baiting clicks with false promises.

If a blockbuster disappoints, we’ll articulate precisely why without hyperbolic takedowns. If an indie title innovates brilliantly, we’ll explain its significance without resorting to empty praise. No exceptions, no compromises.

Beyond Gaming Reviews

about-us

Our mission extends beyond evaluating the latest releases:

Heritage Preservation

The African gaming experience has largely gone undocumented. While international archives preserve Western gaming history, local gaming culture—from Johannesburg arcade scenes to early internet cafés in Cape Town—risks fading from memory. Our “Digital Heritage” project collaborates with museums and universities to document South African gaming before it’s lost forever.

From capturing oral histories with pioneering local developers to preserving South African-made modifications and fan communities, we’re committed to ensuring our region’s gaming contribution isn’t erased from history.

Industry Development

The creators behind our favourite games deserve fair treatment. We cover workplace conditions, industry business models, and development challenges with particular attention to how they manifest in emerging markets like South Africa.

Our biannual “State of Play: SA Gaming Industry Report” combines developer interviews, market analysis, and policy examination to track the growth of game development in Africa—highlighting both exciting breakthroughs and persistent obstacles.

Newcomer Welcome

Not everyone has been gaming since childhood. Our “Controller Confidence” programme breaks down gaming fundamentals, explains evolving control schemes, and introduces genre conventions to help new or returning players navigate today’s complex gaming landscape. Because age, background or experience level should never prevent anyone from discovering the joy of interactive entertainment.

Join The Community

Megarom isn’t merely a website—it’s a gathering space for those passionate about games throughout Southern Africa. Here’s how to become part of our growing family:

Discord Lekgotla

Our Discord server functions as a digital lekgotla (meeting place) for substantive gaming conversation, featuring channels covering everything from hardware recommendations during load-shedding to thoughtful discussions about narrative design. We host regular developer Q&As, weekend gaming sessions, and even a reading circle focused on interactive storytelling.

The Friday Fragment

Our newsletter delivers more than article roundups. Each edition features exclusive insights from our editorial team, early peeks at upcoming features, and community spotlights celebrating remarkable projects from local gamers and developers.

Voices of Africa Programme

Have unique insights or expertise to contribute? Our Voices of Africa Programme provides mentorship and platform for emerging African gaming writers and critics. Selected submissions receive professional editing support, fair compensation, and prominent placement alongside our established contributors.

Our Commitment

The gaming landscape evolves rapidly, but our fundamental values remain unchanging. When engaging with Megarom, we pledge:

  • We will prioritise truth over traffic numbers
  • We will acknowledge our sources and own our mistakes
  • We will approach games as sophisticated cultural artifacts deserving serious critique
  • We will champion the people who create games, play games, and build communities around them
  • We will forever remain players first and publishers second

This platform exists because we love games—their power to connect diverse people, challenge conventional thinking, showcase technical innovation, and tell stories that respect African experiences. Every article, video, and community event grows from that essential passion for interactive entertainment.

Thank you for taking time to learn who we are. We’re just beginning this journey, and we invite you to join us as we build something special.
